Milford-on-Sea
Introduction and Info

Location Information (key)
(Unsuitable)
Cliff

(Collecting from Milford) - 2000

LOCATION

You can access Milford-On-Sea (Hordle Cliff) via the B3058 which will lead to a car park near Taddiford Farm between Barton on Sea and Milford-On-Sea. This a pay car park and there is a short easy walk to the cliff top

Milford consists of the Barton Formation and contains good exposures. The beds are very similar to those of Barton-On-Sea and slippage is regular, giving danger to mud slides and sinking patches. The Barton Clay is rich with hundreds of different species of shells. Collecting is not as good as that of Barton though due to different zones being dependent on the slippage, it is a good place to visit at the same time as visiting Barton and a wider range of shells will be found.

EQUIPMENT

A knife and pick will come in handy when looking in these beds. You can easily 'lift' fossils and place into small containers. Fossils are extremely fragile and should be placed upon putting sand in the bottom of any container. Try to separate fossils and it is not recommended to use plastic bags. Suitable footwear should be worn.

SAFETY AND DANGERS

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. Care should be taken of tides at Milford as you can become easily cut off. Care must also be taken of the soft areas in the clay, it is easy to become stuck especially in the landslipped areas. Many of these are still active so extreme care should be taken after and during long spells of rain.
