LOCATION

The beach at Beer Head itself is not accessible, you need to head for the South West of the main town of Beer heading towards 'South Down Common', here you will find a car park where you may gain access to the beach.

The chalk sections at Beer head are of Cenomanian Limestone, middle and a large proportion of Upper. Beer head forms the most Western Outcrop of Upper Chalk in England. Most of the zones are nodular and Echnoids such as Micraster cortestudinarium, Holaster ad Micraster are in these nodules with flints.

There is a lot of middle chalk, 156ft of chalk, including the Terebratulina lata and Inoceramus labiatus zones. Near the base, the Beer Freestone which is 13ft thick in places yields Inoceramus and other shells.

EQUIPMENT

The chalk here is very hard and you will need a good hammer and chisel. Fossils should be wrapped and placed into bags. It is ideal during the summer months to wear sun glasses since the suns reflection against the white chalk can be very powerful. Some people also use gloves since the Chalk is Alkaline and can cause skin irritation.

SAFETY AND DANGERS

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. This part of the coastline can be very dangerous for tidal conditions, make sure you return before the tide turns. The cliffs are quite high, it is important to keep away from the base of the cliff as rocks often fall.
